Smarter Planet

It's been a while since IBM has launched the "Smarter Planet" campaign and we have yet to witness or hear news about its impact to businesses cross industries around the globe, let alone our daily livelihood.

The idea was a simple one but it carries a much deeper meaning and greatest potential as we explore and give it more serious thought around everything that we do and anything that we encounter in our day-to-day life...no matter how old or young you are.

Here's the general outlines:

The world is becoming instrumented. By 2010, there will be a billion transistors per human, each one costing one ten-millionth of a cent.

The world is becoming interconnected. With a trillion networked things—cars, roadways, pipelines, appliances, pharmaceuticals and even livestock—the amount of information created by those interactions grows exponentially.

All things are becoming intelligent. Algorithms and powerful systems can analyze and turn those mountains of data into actual decisions and actions that make the world work better. Smarter.

Welcome to a "Smarter Planet". You are already here...so, start identifying work/tasks that can be done by the computer or equipments today. Tomorrow is definitely going to be a better day!

On The Road Again!

Supposed to be in Bangkok last Monday (20/4) but travel ban by country security officer at 11th hour. It's been a while since I stopped traveling but seems inevitable as it is quite impossible to not travel and still cover the region. Was quite surprised that I can hang on to not leaving the country for 6 months!

Next stop Jakarta...and it's going to be tough after all these years of living in familiar environment...too comfy for too long. Looking at the bright side it's not at all bad as I can pay visit to old friends and joints in some of the most amazing Asian cities.

May 4 is the day...wish me luck! Hope to come back in one piece...and be ready for next voyage on May 11 - to the land of Jollibee's! Let me know if you are going too...maybe we can have dinner together...

No News is Good News?

On the contrary, it doesn't mean anything. Most probably life goes on as normal and likely to be a case of over engross in the day-to-day errands and job.

With the global economic slowdown and uncertainty in most peoples livelihood, one have more thoughts than just surfing Net and maintaining their blogs (if they have one). I guess I am one of them...really forgotten all about this digital diary after starting with the new working life at Big Blue.

Was it really that significant or just another lame excuse? We shall see...hopefully my life will go back on track pretty soon.

New job New life

6th day of October - Just started with the Big Blue...it's boring and refreshing mixed

7th day of October - Sorted with the ThinkPad T43...at least a toy to play with and most improtantly...get Connected!

8th day of October - Met my location manager for the very first time...but only for a brief 15 minutes (maybe less)

9th day of October - Asked to extend my network both internally and externally. Blending into the Blue way of life...cold and arrogant

10th day of October - TGIF...continue to re-establish links with old friends and class mates. Too bad they are already very senior in that organization...no time for small fry like me

11th day of October - A game of golf...won 3 balls at the end...not bad for a lousy week. Raya visit to the neighbor...excellent 'rendang' and 'roti jala'

12th day of October - Quality time with the kids...their favourite joint McD...where else

13th day of October - Blue Monday Blue...say no more

14th day of October - Bored, bored and extra bored. This w3 web pages are driving me nuts. Got the name card...minus the most important mobile phone number...bugger!

15th day of October - First warm feeling as there are actually friendly people around. Not that I am bothered...already used to eating alone and independent.

Hopefully...tomorrow will be a better (and productive) day!

God - According to an 8-year old

I must confess that I am a free thinker...at least for the past many years...and still am. To me, religion and faith are spiritual and the 'fixation' that people hang on to as a guidance and intimate shelter. Through good times and bad especially during troubled circumstances. Not many people can handle sorrow such as death of loved ones hence faith provides a perfect get-away.

I am relaying the following elucidation about 'God' in the eye of an 8-year old. Enjoy!

=============================================

It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula Vista, CA. He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to 'explain God.'

[... and he had such an assignment, in California, and someone published it, I guess miracles do happen ! . ]

EXPLANATION OF GOD:

'One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn't make grownups, just babies I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn't have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.'

'God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times besides bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off.'

'God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.'

'Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista . At least there aren't any who come to our church.'

'Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said OK.'

'His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in
heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important.'

'You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.'

'You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God! Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.'

'If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is
good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids.'

'But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he pleases. And...that's why I believe in God.'
